Julian Dyson

Born and Bred in St. Mawes on the Roseland Peninsula of Cornwall, painting has been a lifelong passion for Julian Dyson. Entirely self-taught, he has developed his own unique style which can best be described as figurative but painted in an abstract way.

His work is influenced by the environment that surrounds him and by the wealth of local characters he encounters in day-to-day village life. His quirky drawings, paintings and sculptures of animals and people are often imbued with his wry sense of humour. They possess a strong linear quality and a vitality of color and movement that is quite infections.

Julian´s preferred medium for painting is acrylic favored because of its dual translucent and opaque qualities. Preliminary drawing is usually executed in charcoal, before layers of acrylic are added. The top surface of paint is often scratched into to reveal the base color beneath. Exploratory marks made with charcoal and brush all form an integral part of the final image.
