Lawrie Quigley

"I have taught Fine Art for over thirty years, mainly in Further and Higher Education, and am currently working part time with Liverpool University students - as well as being embarked on a year long Coast to Coast landscape painting project, visually recording the Northern landscape from Cumbria to North Yorkshire throughout all four seasons - and backed and sponsored by Castlegate House Gallery and Turners Paints Ltd, respectively. A large exhibition of the work to show at the Castlegate House Gallery in the Autumn of 2022".

Lawrie Quigley was born and brought up in Birkenhead on Merseyside and first went to Art School there, followed by subsequent study on the B.A. Hons Fine Art Degree course at Loughborough University and the Post-Graduate Master’s Degree at The Royal Academy Schools, respectively. He has continued to paint and exhibit his work in both London based and regional galleries, as well as teaching part-time in a number of Art Colleges and Universities.

His work focuses on the three main figurative themes throughout British and European painting : Landscape, Figure and Still-Life – and strives to capture the mood and atmosphere conveyed by the visual imagery and sensations of everyday experiences, usually concerned with the quality of light and compositional structure, as well as the manipulative and expressive qualities of oil paint.

He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Turner Gold Medal and British Institution Fund whilst at the royal Academy, as well as being a Stowell’s Trophy prize-winner. His work is held in many public and private collections, both in the UK and internationally – and he has been granted many bursaries, including Artist residencies at the Birmingham Royal Ballet and the Victoria Theatre in Bath.

Having lived in London and the South Coast for a number of years, he has now re-located back to his native Merseyside, and lives on the Wirral.
